Almine Rech Paris, Brian Calvin
Opening on Saturday, March 9th, 2019 / 6 – 8 pm
March 09 — April 06, 2019 • Paris
Almine Rech Paris is pleased to announce the third solo exhibition by Brian Calvin with the gallery, featuring new series of paintings and drawings.
After a period of representing isolated figures in paintings, Calvin spent the past year exploring their possible combinations through the representation of duos, trios, and groups. In his new large format paintings, the artist investigates how much he can squeeze into the foreground of each composition, minimizing or eliminating any background altogether. In interaction with the paintings, the drawings realized with both colour pencil and pastel reflect a crude simplicity where the artist keeps playing with the conventions of figurative representation. Through difference and repetition, Brian Calvin’s new exhibition at Almine Rech Paris explores the shifting emotional temperature of subtle variation.
Brian Calvin (b. 1969, Visalia, CA) lives and works in Los Angeles. His recent solo exhibitions include ‘Così fan tutte’, Gallery Met, Metropolitan Opera, New York (2018); ‘States’, Almine Rech, Brussels (2017) ; ‘Hours’, Almine Rech, Paris (2016) ; ‘End of Messages’, Le Consortium, Dijon, France which traveled to Mu.ZEE, Ostende, Belgium.
